(’13宝鸡三检)For years I wanted a flower garden. But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins, Alisa and Alan. And then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.

Money was tight, as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say, “Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.”

Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own.

One spring morning, on Mother's Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I realized that cars were tooting their horns as they drove by. I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow, because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on and I couldn't believe what I saw.

There was a money tree in my yard!

I went outside to look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. Think of all the garden flowers I could buy with one hundred dollars! There was also a note attached,“I owe you eight hours of digging time. Love, Marvin.”

Marvin kept his promise, too. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen foot bed for me. And my other children bought me tools, ornaments, a trellis(框架), a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.

That was three years ago. Now my garden is very pretty, just like what I wanted. When I go out and tend my flowers, I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. I feel like they're right there with me.

I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

(13合肥一检)Children today would rather toy with new technologies. The role of children has changed as well as that of teens. The world has truly evolved throughout the years.

Today ,a typical day in the life of a five-year-old is entirely different from what it once was. A few decades ago children used to work.  They did the kind of work parents do today. Today there are shows on which children are putting pounds of make-up on and have flashing things all over their bodies. This makes a child want to paper over all of their imperfections. They think they have to look perfect all the time.

Teens have changed as well.  My grandma got married when she was thirteen. Girls who had an arranged marriage had no time to play because they were expected to cook, clean, take care of the kids, and do housework every single day. Today, we go to school every morning, maybe participate in some after-school activities, and possibly go to work for extra cash. Then we go home and do homework, and eat. After all of this we have to find the time to socialize by texting, talking on the phone, or logging on to social networking sites.  We enjoy ourselves a lot.

The generation before us complains about how they did not have the things we have now. They say we are not appreciative and do not value life or just do not care about our futures anymore. Let's make a change! The youth have the power to work on whatever they believe in and make a difference in the world. Take advantage of your resources. It is never too late to make a positive change in our world.

63. The role of children and teens has changed mainly because _______.

A. new technologies are developing and widely used

B. they don't have to work hard as their parents did

C. their world has truly evolved

D. they look perfect all the time

64. The underlined phrase in Para. 2 probably means to _______.

A. put up with  B. make up for

C. put aside     D. cover up

65. We can learn from the text that nowadays teenagers _______.

A. do housework as their parents did

B. are having a social life in richer ways

C. are seldom satisfied with what they have

D. don't appreciate and value life

66. The author's attitude towards the changes of teens' life is _______.

A. critical                   B. neutral

C. optimistic                      D. complaining

D

(13南平质检)Poor sleep can have a great effect on the functions inside the human body, say UK researchers.  The activity of hundreds of genes was changed when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week. The researchers said the results of the recent research helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.  Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to poor sleep.

What poor sleep actually does to affect health, however, is unknown. So researchers at the University of Surrey analyzed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with those after a week of fewer than six hours a night. More than 700 genes were changed due to poor sleep. Each contains the instructions for building a protein (蛋白质), so those that became more active produced more proteins changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed    —some genes naturally get weak in activity through the day, but this effect was eased due to poor sleep. Prof. Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC, “There was quite a sharp change in activity in many different kinds of genes. Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected. Prof. Smith added, Clearly sleep is of extreme importance to rebuilding the body and maintaining (维持) a functional state.”

Dr. Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the key findings were the effects on inflammation (炎症)and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes. The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could get rid of the effects of poor sleep. Dr. Reddy said,“My feeling is that sleep is particularly important to make all cells grow again.”

67. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. why body clock was affected by poor sleep

B. how researchers found the results of poor sleep

C. how poor sleep could affect the human body

D. why proteins changed the chemistry of the body

68. What could poor sleep result in?

A. The changes in genes.

B. Weaker body reactions.

C. Less active genes.

D. The decrease in proteins.

69. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. researchers know little about the effect of poor sleep

B. people with poor sleep are expected to live a short life

C. a new drug to cure poor sleep will soon come into being

D. genes should grow and die naturally accord-ing to the body clock

70. According to Dr. Akhilesh Reddy, which of the following is TRUE?

A. Body clock will disturb the immune system.

B. Sleep is closely related to the growth of cells.

C. Healthy  problems  are  the results of poor sleep.

D. Sleep is important to keep the functional state.

第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

Tips to Become More Confident

Our confidence plays an important role in ability to achieve success and happiness. It affects our mental thought patterns, the way we speak and act, and the decisions we make in all areas of our lives. Confident people take more action, perform better,  and  are  more  likely  to achieve their goals.    71    Lucky for us, confidence can be built and strengthened until it becomes natural, just as any other habit. It simply takes a little time, some effort, and a bit of attention.

Learn.

The more knowledge you acquire, the more confident you will be. Knowledge is power, and the more powerful you feel, the higher your confidence will be.

    72

Keep a list of successes, big and small. It'll help you to see your abilities in a more positive and realistic light.

Start a conversation.

When you find yourself in a social situation, don't  always turn  to  those  you're comfortable with.

73    Eventually getting to know new people will become easier.

Don't compare.

Stop measuring yourself against others.    74    Making comparisons is a damaging and an inaccurate measure of success anyway.

Confidence helps you to be more secure in your abilities and more positive in your attitude. It also encourages you to be more assertive(坚定自信的)to take up more challenges,  and  to improve your skills.    75    The end result is a better outlook, more success, and a higher quality of life in all areas.

A. As an added benefit, you'll attract like-minded people.

B. Track your accomplishments.

C. The result you get isn't always real.

D. It may only do harm to them.

E. List your super abilities.

F. What's more, confident people can take more joy from their accomplishments.

G. Talk to someone you don't know very well.

Here I am in the middle of a city, 350 miles far away from our farmhouse. Do you want to know why we move last week? To make matters bad, now I have to share a room with my younger sister, Maggie. Tomorrow is first day of school. I am awfully tiring, but I know I'll never fall sleep.

71F  F项与该空前一句“Confident people...their goals.”一致,都在介绍自信的人的表现,故选F项。

72B  B项与该空后的“Keep a list of successes”一致。

73G  G项“Talk to someone you don't know very well.”与该空前的“don't always turn to those you're comfortable with”和该空后的“getting to know new people”一致。

74根据空前的“不要把自己跟其他人作比较”以及空后的“Making comparisons is a damaging and an inaccurate measure of success anyway.”可知,C项“得到的结果不总是正确的”符合语境。

75文章最后一段已经列出了自信的一系列“好处”,该空后进一步说明了自信的最终结果,故可推测该空也应为自信的好处,故选A项。

【范文赏读】

Life is not easy.As a student,we should learn how to protect ourselves in the school.

When an earthquake happens, first we should calm down, which is the most important.Shouting and crying are of no use. Follow the teachers' guidance and keep our actions in order.

Second, hide beneath our desks with our school bags on our heads if we are in the classroom. That can keep us a little safer.Be sure not to jump off the building. Third, if we are on the playground, do not move.Sit on our feet and use hands to cover our heads so that they can be kept from being hit on. At last, help each other. When we are faced with natural disasters, individual power is tiny. Only by uniting can we overcome the difficulties.
